Annual leave — also called holiday allowance or paid time off — is one of the most important employment rights in the UK. Understanding how it accrues, when it can be taken, and what happens at the end of the leave year helps both employees and employers manage it fairly.
All UK workers are entitled to a minimum of 5.6 weeks of paid annual leave per year. For a standard 5-day week, that is 28 days. For part-time workers, it is pro-rated based on the number of days worked per week.
| Days per Week | Statutory Entitlement |
|---|---|
| 5 days | 28 days |
| 4 days | 22.4 days |
| 3 days | 16.8 days |
| 2 days | 11.2 days |
| 1 day | 5.6 days |
Leave accrues at 1/12 of annual entitlement per month. For a full-time worker with 28 days: 28 ÷ 12 = 2.33 days per month. After 6 months, you have accrued 14 days. After 9 months, 21 days.
This matters most when you join or leave mid-year, or when calculating how many days you can take before you have actually accrued them.
These terms are used interchangeably but mean the same thing. Our holiday entitlement calculator focuses on calculating your total statutory entitlement based on your working pattern and region. This calculator focuses on where you are in the leave year — how much you have accrued, used, and have remaining.
On leaving employment, you are paid for any accrued but untaken leave. If you have taken more than you accrued (a leave advance), the employer can deduct the excess from final pay if the contract permits it. Use this calculator to check your position before handing in notice.
